Thanksgiving Turkey or Thanksgiving Raccoon?
Back in 1926, a man from Mississippi gave President Calvin Coolidge and his family a raccoon as a Thanksgiving gift. The man meant it as a generous gift, believing raccoon to be a real delicacy for the table. Coolidge and his family, though, were animal lovers and couldn’t part with Rebecca, the name they gave the raccoon. Rebecca joined the White House menagerie, which included lion cubs, a bear, one hippo, several dogs and canaries. Rebecca had the run of the White House.
Aren’t you glad Coolidge didn’t make raccoon dinners a Thanksgiving tradition?
